How a finding here is checked

Every entry names one document and the exact place inside it. That place is re-opened, and the quoted sentence is looked for word for word. The result of that check, with its date, sits on each entry page.

What the check does

The document is re-opened at the address the record names, or at the public copy the record names when the publisher's own site refuses automated requests
The quoted sentence is looked for word for word not paraphrased, not approximated. Typography is tolerated — curly quotes, thin spaces, the middle dot some journals use in decimals — and nothing else
The figure is looked for too in the forms a source may write it: 1,400, 1 400, 1.4 million, 39·3
The date is recorded so a reader knows when it was last true, not only that it was true once

What the check does not do

It does not say the finding is true. It says the sentence is in the document. Whether the organisation that wrote it was right is a different question, and this register does not answer it — there is no rating on this site, and none in the markup a machine reads.

The four outcomes, and each one says something different

Found word for word the sentence is in the document, at the address shown
Partly found the sentence is in the document, but the file's own text layer breaks part of it — columns, ligatures, a PDF that dislocates decimals. The percentage found is shown, and the entry says where the breakage is
Not found the entry is under review. This is a defect and it is treated as one
Document not reachable from a public address a statement about the document's availability today. Where it was read from is named in each entry's Provenance

How to check it yourself, without trusting any of this

  1. Open the entry. The document, its date and the exact place are on the page.
  2. Open the document at the address shown.
  3. Search for the quoted sentence.

That is the whole design. Everything else on this site — the exports, the markup, the citation formats — exists to make that three-step check fast.
